The Perkins 500/Prima Series engines, launched in 1986, marked an important turning point in the history of the diesel engine. It was the first direct-injected engine used on vans derived from particular vehicles (HSDI/Montego Rover). The two primary features at the root of its design were:
  • Exceptional economy
  • Performance and approval equivalent to gas-engine vehicles
Marine versions of these engines were also marketed. Because these engines are 30% lighter and more compact than other 4-cylinder engines in this category, they offer a true weight/power compromise for small pleasure boats. This line also complies with the AQAP-1 standard (formerly standard Def. 05-21).
